Dr. Paul A. Tipton
Dr Paul Tipton is celebrating 20 years in dental education and is now bringing his internationally renowned courses to Dublin. We managed to speak to Dr Tipton about his career to date, his passion for delivering excellence, instilling confidence in delegates and bringing Tipton Training Limited courses to Dublin. What made you decide to bring your courses over to Dublin?Over the years more and more dentists from Southern and Northern Ireland are coming across to attend my courses in Manchester, on one course last year there was approximately 20. Every year I get asked if I’ll take my courses to them and I feel like this is time to make that move. What is your teaching philosophy? My philosophy is excellence and to promote it through all aspects of Tipton Training Limited to give all dentists I train not only the scientific evidence but also the confidence to perform these techniques. I like to try to understand each individuals background, personality and goals before I start out as I find different dentists and different personalities respond to different approaches.Who was your biggest influence and why?My biggest influence to date is dentistry has been the Eastman Dental Hospital. I spent two years nearly full time there from 1987 to 1989 gaining my master’s degree in Conservative Dentistry. There I met two people who have influenced me greatly in practice - Derek Setchell and Richard Ibbertson who were in charge of the course. My advice to initially go on the course and complete my degree was given to me by Mike Wise, another huge influence on my practicing life. From a business point of view, my greatest influences have been Anthony Robbins, Michael Gerber and Jay Ibrahams, business and interpersonal relationship and marketing gurus from the USA. They have shown me how to improve relationships with patients and also how to place Tipton Training Limited into advantageous business and teaching situations. What prompted you to move to private practice in the first place?I went into an NHS practice after qualifying in 1978, initially in Doncaster. In 1980 I moved into a mixed practice in the centre of Manchester where my principal was Elliot Berman. Between 1980 and 1987, I continued in Manchester in a mixed practice, approximately 50% NHS and 50% private. My decision to go totally private was based on going down to the Eastman Dental Hospital and completing a specialist degree in Conservative and Restorative Dentistry. The degree itself was part-time (2.5 days per week). At the same time, I sold my mixed practice and bought a private practice (that had not been used for two years) in St Ann’s Square in Manchester. I sold St. Ann’s in 2007 and have since set up my new 6 surgery practice in Leeds at the Centre for Advanced Dentistry – Yorkshire. What has been you biggest challenge? My biggest challenge has been to fit in clinical work with my passion for teaching. I have followed many mentors in my life and always believe as you follow (mirror) the gurus then you should achieve the same results. What has been, and still is, the biggest challenge is that of managing a business, especially staff, motivating a team and passing on the enthusiasm and care and teaching members of the team. Now my latest challenge is moving into my new premises at The Centre for Advanced Dentistry – Yorkshire, in Leeds and starting a Restorative, Aesthetic and Implant referral from scratch. It’s a challenge I’m relishing. What has been your biggest mistake? My biggest mistake was spending so much time in NHS and then mixed practice before then going to the Eastman Dental Hospital to complete my master’s degree. I made the move in 1987 and in hindsight should have made the move at least three to five years earlier. Then selling my practice in 2007, that’s why I’m starting another one in Leeds. What would you do differently, given the chance?I don’t think I would do anything differently, other than, as previously stated; I would have done it earlier. Life has been, and always will be, full of challenges and it is our goal to meet them.Professionally, what are you most proud of?I am most proud of the teaching institute that I have developed at Tipton Training. Teaching is especially rewarding when I see dentists who have been on one of my one-year programmes coming back several years later saying that I, in fact, have been the biggest influence on their careers or saying how much the courses have helped them on their way. Many of todays well known dentists have been through my courses, so it’s great when I see them writing articles, gaining awards, appearing on TV and lecturing themselves. From a clinical point of view, I get great pleasure from publishing articles and sharing my experiences in aesthetic and restorative dentistry with fellow professionals. What is your USP (Unique Selling Proposition)?I think this can be summed up by quality, excellence & confidence. I have a fairly unique style of teaching and much prefer delivering the knowledge through seminars rather than lectures. Dentists gain so much more from discussing a subject rather than them being lectured to. I like to get to know my delegates so that I can understand how to best motivate them. I have my enthusiasm and passion for teaching and clinical dentistry shows through. What advice would you give to a young dentist moving into private practice? My advice to anyone moving into private practice is to concentrate on three principles. The first one is clinical excellence and knowledge and would involve going on as many courses as possible. There are so many wonderful courses and teachers out there these days that the young dentist of today has no excuses not to achieve all their goals. I simply try to coach them to do this through my courses and teaching. The second one would be to adopt a guru or mentor who you can talk with and copy. The easiest thing in the world is to copy people who are successful (mirroring) and as long as you do the same things, you too will be successful. The third principle would be to not forget to learn the business aspects of dentistry and especially inter-personal relationship skills, marketing and business finance. Are you dentists receiving appropriate training before moving into private practice? If not, what should they be doing?I would have to say that I feel the training young dentists now receive is not reflected by the demands of private practice. Young dentists today need to spend as much time as possible developing the skills required for private practice and private education courses before making mistakes and jumping into private practice. During these early years, it is most important that dentists consider loss leaders and learning by trying out new techniques, new ideas on patients with much lower fees than expected. Without this you are never able to develop the skill required and still make profits. The courses we teach are practical in nature and give the delegates over a year long course to put the techniques into practice. I can review their work, advise and they can progress. What are your feelings about the future of private dentistry? The future of private dentistry is wonderful even though we are in the midst of a recession, we will soon be out of it. Dentists who have gained the relevant skills will be in a great position to capture the market. I cannot see any hurdles or potential pitfalls facing the dentist in their pursuit of excellence in private dentistry if they take their time and adhere to the correct principals. Increased demand of patients for aesthetic and restorative treatment, means that it is a boom time in private dentistry over the next ten to twenty years. What is the most satisfying aspect of your daily work? The most satisfying aspect of my daily work is making patients happy, providing them with solutions to their dental problems, improving their smile, function and chewing ability and seeing the dentists I have trained go onto bigger and better things and succeed in the profession. I also enjoy working in a team with my staff and interfacing with them on a daily basis. I wear three hats: that of clinician, businessperson and also teacher and I enjoy all three aspects of it. My present mix is that I spend 50% of my time in clinical work and 50% teaching and this is a mix that I want to continue. I do not wish to get to the stage where teaching takes over completely as I feel that I need to treat clinically for my teaching to remain relevant. So what’s next for you?As I said, I’m looking forward to establishing my new practice in Yorkshire. We’re also starting our courses in Greece and Malta later this year as we take Tipton Training International! and there’s a weeks course in Dubai happening too. Right now, I’m just really looking forward to bringing the courses to Dublin and can’t wait to get started. Dr Paul Tipton has a referral practice in Leeds, the Centre for Advanced Dentistry - Yorkshire where he takes cases in Restorative, Aesthetic and Implant dentistry. He is also head of Tipton Training Limited and runs courses in Restorative Dentistry, Implantology, Tooth Preparation and Aesthetic Dentistry.
